How safe is the Ice around here?

February 21st

In most ponds and lakes around our area, we are getting reports of 6" to 10". Watch out for soft edges and some slush on top of the ice in sunny ponds.

You must always take in consideration a few factors that could affect ice thickness:

*Open water nearby.

*Running water (streams, rivers)

*Spring fed areas.

*Beaver dams

* nearby structure, such as docks, big rocks, etc. They tend to absorb heat.

Rivers...coves may be OK, but use caution when you see open water or darker ice towards the middle.

Always use caution and  proper gear while on the ice, and preferably fish with someone else.

Here's an Ice depth chart to help.

If you need help while on the ice, don't be shy...ask one of us. Most of the guys will be glad to help you and teach you a few tricks...have fun!
